Ducks end season 25th overall, go 2-5-0 in final weeks

Apr. 11th, 2023

Anaheim was hoping for a final push in the standings to get that 1st round Pick out of the "Top 10", with the Detroit Red Wings in posession after trading Marco Rossi to the Ducks on New Years Day. After having lost their most important piece on defence, Hampus Lindholm, the remaining games went almost completely out of Anaheims hand.

In our "Game of the Week" the Ducks welcomed the Detroit Red Wings at Honda Center and managed to get a quick start into the game. Anaheim forward Jakob Silfverberg scored the 1-0 lead for his team, assisted by former Red Wing Marco Rossi and rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale. About four minutes later it was Brayden Tracey unassisted with the 2-0 for his Ducks. It took until late in the second period before Anaheim center Sam Steel added another goal to the scoreboard, assisted by defenceman Joel Edmundson. Nothing more happened on the scoreboard in the third period. Overall it was a tight match with 29 to 28 shots for the visiting Red Wings, but Anaheim goalie John Gibson saving all of Detroits shots, earning his 6th shutout of the season and his team a 3-0 win in their final match in the 2022-23 campaign. (MM)

Anaheim going 2-3-0, just two weeks left in season

Mar. 29th, 2023

With two weeks left in the season, the Ducks have 7 games left with 6 points behind their goal to leave the "Bottom 10". Not an easy job to do, when you look at that games and have to play the Toronto Maple Leafs twice and the Carolina Hurricanes - both leading their Divisions by far.

The Ducks started the scoring just 55 seconds into the game when defenceman Hampus Lindholm scored from the point, assisted by rookie centerman Liam Arnsby. After the first break it was Ducks forward Brayden Tracey with a quick goal, just 9 seconds into the period. Liam Arnsby and Nick Jensen assisted on the goal. About four minutes later it was Liam Arnsby himself with another goal and a 4-1 lead for Anaheim. Defenceman Jake Bean assisted on the goal. Nothing else happened on the scoreboard that period, so it took until the middle of the third when Ducks forward Maxime Comtois scored the final goal of the game, assisted by Rickard Rakell and Nick Jensen, to give his team a well deserved 5-1 win over the Predators. Ducks with first negative week after a six-week run

Mar. 19th, 2023

Anaheim went 1-2-0 last week and earned their first negative week in one and a half months. Despite this small step backwards the team ist staying calm and focused on the final four weeks of the season, that will be held in two marathon-sims.

The Ducks hosted the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center and were looking for revenge, after losing to them just three days ago at Vancouver. The game didn't start good at all for Anaheim with the Canuck scoring two goals within the first five minutes. It took until way the middle of the period until Ducks forward Troy Terry scored the first goal for his team and his 35th of the season, assisted by Sam Steel and Trevor Zegras. With just three minutes left in the period it was defenceman Mac Hollowell with his first goal as an Anaheim Duck, again asssited by Sam Steel and Troy Terry. After the break it was Trevor Zegras scoring the first lead of the game for Anaheim. Sam Steel assisted on the goal, again, as did forward Benoit-Olivier Groulx. Vancouver managed to tie the game late in the second before just 41 seconds later Sam Steel scored a goal himself, giving him 4 points that night. Trevor Zegras and defenceman Hampus Lindholm assisted on the goal. Vancouver tied the game late in the third period, before Ducks forward Brayden Tracey scored with just 49 seconds left on the clock, giving his team a 5-4 win at home. Rookie defenceman  Jamie Drysdale and Ondrej Kase assisted on the goal.

The next day Anaheim took the trip to Rogers Place to face off the Edmonton Oilers. The team had a great start into the game scoring three unanswered goals in the first period. Ducks forward Troy Terry started the scoring with an early goal, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Mac Hollowell. About five minutes later it was defenceman Jackson Lacombe who scored for Anaheim, again assisted by Trevor Zegras and also Troy Terry. Late in the period rookie centerman Liam Arnsby added another one to give the Ducks a 3-0 lead after the first period. Defenceman Joel Edmundson assisted on the goal. Not much happened in the second period, despite Edmonton scoring their first goal of the game with less than five minutes left on the clock. The third period was the complete opposite to the first with the Oilers scoring four unanswered goals, turning around the game and handing Anaheim a heavy 5-3 loss after the final buzzer. "That was a tough one. What better start in a road game can you wish for than three goals in the first? And still you leave the ice with nothing.", Ducks captain Rickard Rakkel told the media obviously disappointed.

After a day off Anaheim returned to Honda Center to meet with the Philadelphia Flyers for the final game of the week. Early in the first period it was Ducks defenceman Nick Jensen scoring the lead from the point, assisted by Sam Steel and Trevor Zegras. The Flyers themselves didn't need much time to tie the game just about a minute later. The visitors added two more goals in the first period before heading into the break. No goals were added to the scoreboard in the second period, but Philadelphia taking a total of five minor penalties for playing a very physical game. It took until late in the third period before Anaheim forward Maxime Comtois scored on the powerplay, assisted by captain Rickard Rakell and Brayden Tracey. The Flyers stayed focused and managed to score one more on the empty net and the Ducks losing 4-2 at the end and their second game of the week. (MM)

Anaheim with 1-2-1 record finishing two week road trip

Mar. 12th, 2023

The Anaheim Ducks are hoping to win as many games as possible before the end of the 2022-23 campaign, just four weeks ahead. After two weeks on the road the team finished 1-2-1 and is preparing for the final 15 games of the season. "Ten out of fifteen, that would be a great result.", GM Mohr told the media on how many games the Ducks want to win at the end.

In the first game fo the week Anaheim visited Enterprise Center to face off against the St. Louis Blues. In the middle of the first period it was the Blues scoring the 1-0 lead and taking the result into the first break. No goals were scored in the second, so it took until early in the third period when it was Ducks captain Rickard Rakkel with the tying goal, assisted by Sam Steel and Trevor Zegras. About five minutes later Anaheim scored another goal when defenceman Hampus Lindholm took a shot from the point. Jakob Silfverberg and Jamie Drysdale assisted on the goal, giving the Ducks a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

After having two days off Anaheim went on to Western Canada to meet with the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. The hosts started scoring pretty quick with the 1-0 leading goal after hust 72 seconds into the game. About five minutes later Vancouver added another goal to take a two goal lead into the first break. The Canucks started the second period almost as fast as the first, scoring a total of five unanswered goals before Ducks forward Jakob Silfverberg finally scored for his team late in the period. Defencemen Joel Edmundson and Jake Bean assisted on the goal. With the start of the third period Anaheim managed to stop the bleeding and scored their second goal of the game by Brayden Tracey. Defenceman Nick Jensen and forward Benoit-Olivier Groulx assisted on the goal. Vancouver added another goal about two minutes later before Ducks leading-scorer Troy Terry scored the final goal of the match, assisted by Sam Steel and Trevor Zegras. Surprisingly Anaheim goalie John Gibson was in net the whole game, taking the 6-3 loss for his team. (MM)

Ducks end month with best record since Oct. 2021

Mar. 5th, 2023

Anaheim has played some solid hockey over the past five weeks earing a 9-2-1 record in February with a total of 40 goals scored and only 25 goals allowed. It was the teams most successful month under GM Mohr and the best since October 2021 (10-3-0).

The Ducks started the week on the road to visit PNC Arena and the Carolina Hurricanes, another possible cup contender this season. It took until the middle of the first period before Anaheim forward Jakob Silfverberg scored the leading goal for his team, assited by Boone Jenner and Hampus Lindholm. After the break it was Ducks rookie center Liam Arnsby scoring the 2-0 lead, assisted by defencemen Jackson Lacombe and Nick Jensen. About five minutes before the second break Carolina managed to cut the lead in half going into the final period. Here it was again Anaheim with an early goal on the powerplay by Sam Steel, assisted by Jake Bean and Ondrej Kase. In the middle of the period Ducks forward Brayden Tracey added another goal, assisted by rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale, to give his team a 4-1 victory at the end of the game.

Two days later Anaheim returned home to play the Calgary Flames at Honda Center. With just 19 seconds into the game it was Ducks leading-scorer Troy Terry who scored the go-ahead goal, assisted by defencemen Hampus Lindholm and Jamie Drysdale. Exactly 10 minutes later Calgary managed to tie the game at 1-1. Within not even minute Anaheim rookie Jamie Drysdale took the chance and added his name to the scoreboard, with Maxime Comtois and captain Rickard Rakell assisting on the goal. It took until the middle of the second period before the Flames tied the game, again. But later it was Ducks forward Benoit-Olivier Groulx who regained the lead for his team, with defenceman Joel Edmundson and Jakob Silfverberg assisting on the goal. The third period turned out to be all offense, with Anaheim scoring early on the powerplay. It was again Troy Terry with his second goal of the night, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Sam Steel. Calgary managed to cut the lead in half with another goal and a score of 4-3 so far. The game went back and forth now with Trevor Zegras scoring on the powerplay for Anaheim, again assisted by Sam Steel and Troy Terry, before Calgary scored another one just 23 seconds after the goal. At the end it was Anaheim forward Maxime Comtois sealing the deal and earning his team a 6-4 victory. Rookie centerman Marco Rossi and defenceman Jake Bean assisted on the goal.

On the first day of March the Ducks travelled to Xcel Energy Center to face off against the Minnesota Wild. It took until the middle of the first period before the hosting Wild started the scoring and added a second goal just 43 seconds later. With less than 90 mseconds left in the period it was Anaheim defenceman Jake Bean, who cut the lead in half, assisted by Maxime Comtois and Joel Edmundson. The second period din't bring much to the scoresheet until Minnesota managed to score on the powerplay with less than three minutes left on the clock. After the final break Ducks forward Sam Steel scored on the powerplay himself, with Trevor Zegras assisting on the goal, but that couldn't prevent his team from taking a 3-2 loss after the final buzzer.

For the final game of the week Anaheim took the flight back to the West Coast to play the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. The Sharks scored the first goal of the game in the middle of the period, before Ducks forward Ondrej Kase tied it with just 77 seconds left on the clock. Both Benoit-Olivier Groulx and Jake Bean assisted on the goal. After the first break San Jose regained the lead early before Anaheim centerman Boone Jenner tied the game again for his team, with defenceman Hampus Lidnholm assisting on the goal. With just 36 seconds left in the second period it was Troy Terry giving the Ducks their first lead of the game, on the powerplay. Sam Steel and Trevor Zegras assisted on the goal and everyone was expecting to head into the final break with that score. But with the final shift, and just 18 seconds after the Ducks scored, the Sharks tied the game at 3-3 heading into the locker room. No more goals were scored in the final period, so it took overtime and another goal for the Sharks to give Anaheim a 4-3 loss in extra time. (MM)

Ducks stay hot, 2-1-0 against possible playoff teams

Feb. 26th, 2023

Anaheim is on a run to its best month in the 2022-23 campaign, with just two games left and already a record of 7-2-1 for a total of 15 points in February. The team is doing small steps forward in the standings, looking to leave the "Bottom 10" at the end because of having traded this years 1st round Pick to the Detroit Red Wings about two months ago.

The Ducks took the trip to Wells Fargo Center to face off against the Philadelphia Flyers. It took until late in the first period before the Flyers scored the 1-0 lead. Defencemen Hampus Lindholm and Jamie Drysdale assisted on the goal. It took until early in the third period before Philadelphia regained the lead and with 33 seconds left in the game added another one on an empty net to hand the Ducks a 3-1 loss after the final buzzer.

Just one day later Anaheim welcomed the Arizona Coyotes at Honda Center for their second matchup this month. It took until late in the first period before Ducks forward Ondrej Kase scored his first goal of the season on the powerplay, after missing the first three months of the season due to injury. Captain Rickard Rakell and Joel Edmundson assisted on the goal.

For their final game of the week the Ducks visited United Center to matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks. In the middle of the first period it was Anaheim forward Jakob Silfverberg who scored the 1-0 lead for his team, assisted by defenceman Jamie Drysdale. With less than five minutes left on the clock Ondrej Kase scored his second goal in as many games to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Defenceman Jake Bean and forward Brayden Tracey assisted on the goal. They scored three unanswered goals in less than six minutes to tie the game at 3-3, heading into the third period. Both teams were battling hard as if it was a playoff match and it took until the final five minutes of the game before Anaheims leading-scorer Troy Terry scored his 30th goal of the season and gave his team a 4-3 victory over the Blackhawks, with defenceman Jake Bean earning his second assist of the game. Anaheim happy with 6-3-1 record in last ten games

Feb. 19th, 2023

Ducks GM Mohr told the media last week, that the team is still motivated to win as many games as possible this season, despite not being part of the 2023 playoffs. Anaheim played some impressive games against two cup contenders and is believing to be competetive each and every night.

The Ducks travelled to Pepsi Center to face off against the back-to-back champions Colorado Avalanche. Despidte being outshot 40 to 25 shots it was Anaheim scoring the leading goal in the middle of the first period. Boone Jenner scored his 5th goal of the season, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and Jakob Silfverberg. About three minutes later it was Ducks team-leading scorer Troy Terry on the powerplay giving his team a 2-0 lead before the break. Forward Trevor Zegras and defenceman Jake Bean assisted on the goal. In the second and third period no more goals were added to the scoreboard, but a lot of penalty minutes on both sides. At the end Anaheim won the game 2-0 and rookie goalie Jesper Eliasson earned his first shutout in his first ever appearance with the pro team.

Two days later the Ducks were visiting T-Mobile Arena to play the Vegas Golden Knights, another cup contender in the Western Conference.  Anaheim forward Troy Terry started the scoring on the powerplay, early in the first period. Trevor Zegras and Sam Steel assisted on the goal. About five minutes later Vegas tied the game and the teams headed to the break with that score, later. Early in the second period it was Maxime Comtois, scoring the 2-1 lead for the Ducks, assisted by defenceman Nick Jensen and captain Rickard Rakell. Late in the period the Golden Knights tied the game, again, before the break. In the final period it was Vegas scoring their first lead of the matchup, holding it and handing Anaheim a tough 3-2 loss at the end of the final buzzer. (MM)

Ducks add three more wins, go 5-0-1 in last two weeks

Feb. 12th, 2023

The Anaheim Ducks earned their longest unbeaten-streak this season, adding three more wins to their account last week. "We won't be part of the playoffs this year, but still we want to compete and earn points in the standings. No longer having our 1st round pick in the upcoming Entry Draft is an additional motivation to that.", GM Mohr told the media.

Anaheim started the week on the road at Nationwide Arena to face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets. It was early in the period when team-leading scorer Troy Terry earned his team the 1-0 lead, assisted by defenceman Hampus Lindholm and Sam Steel. About four minutes later Terry added another goal to his resume, again asssited by Sam Steel and also rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale. After the first break Columbus managed to score their first goal of the game early in the period. Later it was again Ducks forward Troy Terry who scored his third goal of the night and earned his third hattrick of the season. Defenceman Jackson Lacombe and Maxime Comtois assited on the goal. Just 41 seconds after his third goal Terry scored again, this time on the powerplay, assisted by Jake Bean and Sam Steel with his third assist of the game. After the final break it was Anaheim defenceman Jake Bean who scored early in the third, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg. The Blue Jackets came back too late scoring twice in the middle of the period, before Ducks defenceman Jamie Drysdale scored his 10th goal of the season on an empty netter and Anaheim winning 6-3 at the end of the game.

After two days of rest the Ducks moved on to Staples Center, to meet with their rival Los Angeles Kings for the first of two matchups this week. It turned out to be a perfect start for Anaheim with forward Trevor Zegras scoring after just 47 seconds into the game, assisted by Troy Terry and Sam Steel. After the first break it was again Trevor Zegras scoring, this time on the powerplay, with Sam Steel adding another assist and also Ondrej Kase for his first point of the year, after missing half of the season because of injury. The Ducks didn't slow down and were awarded with another goal when Jakob Silfverberg scored in the middle of the period, assisted by Colton Sissons and Joel Edmundson. About five minutes later young centerman Marco Rossi added another goal to the scoreboard, to give his team a commanding 4-0 lead before the final period. Jakob Silfverberg assisted on the goal. In the third Anaheim slowed down a bit and the Kings managed to score on the powerplay with just 80 seconds left in the game, ruining another chance for Ducks goalie John Gibson to earn his 6th shutout of the season. Still Anaheim won 4-1 after the final buzzer.

For the final game of the week the Ducks returned home to Honda Center, playing the Los Angeles Kings for the second time in three days. It took until the middle of the first period before Anaheim forward Sam Steel scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Trevor Zegras. Late in the period Los Angeles managed to score the tying goal before heading into the break. In the second period both teams didn't want to risk too much, why it took until two minutes before the second break when the Kings scored the 2-1 lead. About a minute later in the period Ducks forward Troy Terry tied the game unasissted. No more goals were scored in the third period or overtime, but again Troy Terry scored the lone goal in the shootout to give Anaheim a 3-2 victory in the skills competition. (MM)

Anaheim with 2-0-1 record moving into next month

Feb. 5th, 2023

The Ducks have earned their first positive week in two months with just 29 games left in the 2022-23 season. Also the defence showed their best performance this year allowing only 4 goals against in three games.

Anaheim started the week at home with the Florida Panthers visiting Honda Center. The first period didn't show any goals on the scoreboard but half a dozen penalties being called. With just 28 seconds into the second period it was Ducks defenceman Hampus Lindholm who gave his team the 1-0 lead. Forwards Trevor Zegras and Marco Rossi assisted on the goal. About four minutes later it was Nick Jensen with the second goal for Anaheim, assisted by Sam Steel and Troy Terry. In the middle of the period it was again Hampus Lindholm with his second of the night, assisted by Jamie Drysdale. The fourth and final goal before the second break was scored by Drysdale himself with less than two minutes left in the period. Trevor Zegras earned his second assist and Hampus Lindholm his third point of the night. Late in the third period Florida managed to score a goal and take away the shutout for Ducks goalie John Gibson, who still saved 18 of 19 shots and lead Anaheim to a 4-1 victory.

The second game of the week took the Ducks to Little Caesars Arena to face off against the Detroit Red Wings. Despite being outshot 36 to 17 shots the game turned out to be pretty even until the very end. In a very low-scoring match it took until the middle of the third period before Troy Terry scored the first goal for Anaheim, assisted by defenceman Joel Edmundson. With just 71 seconds before the end of regulation the Red Wings tied the game, managed to force overtime and later handing the Ducks a 2-1 loss after the skills competition.

Anaheim returned home to Honda Center to meet with the Arizona Coyotes. Early in the first period it was forward Maxime Comtois with the leading-goal for the Ducks, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and captain Rickard Rakell. Arizona managed to tie the game about four minutes later, before Rickard Rakell himself scored for Anaheim to regain the lead, late in the period. Again Jamie Drysdale assisted, as did Hampus Lindholm. The teams went into the first break and it took until the middle of the second before the Coyotes scored and tied the game, again. Nothing else happened on the scoreboard before the middle of third, when Ducks defenceman Joel Edmundson scored, assisted by Maxime Comtois and giving his team a 3-2 victory in a well fought game against a Coyotes team that's supposed to be one of the leagues cup contenders this season. Ducks lose only game at end of All-Star Week with 2-0

Jan. 29th, 2023

Anaheim didn't have a player named to the All-Star Game at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, so the whole team could use the extra time for some rest and licking their wounds. Some smaller adjustments had been made in tactics and forward Tomas Tatar was traded to Tampa Bay for a couple of 4th round Picks in the 2024 and 2025 Entry Draft.

The Ducks played host to the Washington Capitals at Honda Center and it took until the final two minutes of the first period before the Capitals scored the leading goal. No more goals were scored in the second period and almost the whole third, too. With just 19 seconds left on the clock Washington scored an empty netter and handed Anaheim a 2-0 loss. As a crumb of comfort Ducks goalie John Gibson was awarded the "1st Star of the Game", saving 43 of 45 shots he faced with a save percentage of .977 overall. (MM)

Anaheim continues slide, has 2-6-1 record this month

Jan. 22nd, 2023

The Ducks biggest issue this season is, that they can't find a  way to be consistent. The roster looks competetive to have a chance to make the playoffs on a regular basis in the near future - but things just don't seem to click, yet. Another negative record month will be in the books soon.

Anaheim started the week at home at Honda Center with the back-to-back champions Colorado Avalanche visiting. The game started with an early powerplay goal by the Avalanche and it took until the middle of the period before Ducks forward Maxime Comtois scored and tied the game, assisted by Jake Bean and Rickard Rakell. The second period was all about penalty minutes with no further goals on the score board. In the middle of the third Colorado scored to regain the lead and it took until 23 seconds before the final buzzer, when Anaheim scored again and took the game into overtime. Defenseman Jackson Lacombe was the lucky scorer, assited by Jacob Larsson and Liam Arnsby. Nothing happened in overtime, so the game had to be decided in the shootout, where the Avalanche took their chance in the 5th round and handed the Ducks a 3-2 loss after the skills competition. A result the team can live with, after being outshot 59 to 24 shots by Colorado.

The next day Anaheim had to face off against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center, where they managed to score the first goal of the game in the middle of the first period. A very rare moment this season. Defenceman Jake Bean scored on the powerplay, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Sam Steel. After that the Sharks woke up and scored three unanswered goals within four minutes, before heading into the break. Early in the second San Jose added another goal and kept the score until the next break of the game. With the start of the final period the Ducks regained some confidence, when defenceman Jackson Lacombe scored two minutes after the break. Trevor Zegras and Colton Sissons assisted on the goal. In the middle of the period it was Colton Sissons himself with another goal for Anaheim, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and again Trevor Zegras. San Jose added two more goals very late in the period, one on the powerplay and the other one with just two seconds left on an empty net, resulting in a 6-3 loss for the Ducks.

The final match of the week took Anaheim to Barclays Center, to visit the New York Islanders. With no gas left in the tank the first period turned out to be a disaster for the Ducks. The Islanders took the lead early int he period and managed to score a total of four unanswered goals before the break. In the second period Anaheim forward Maxime Comtois scored the first goal for his team, assisted by Liam Arnsby and Rickard Rakell, before New York scored another goal to regain the four-goal lead. With just 18 seconds into the third it was Ducks forward Liam Arnsby himself, scoring the seond goal of the night for his team. Defenseman Jamie Drysdale and again Rickard Rakell assisted on the goal. Still Anaheim lost the game 5-2 at the end. (MM)

Ducks fall back in old patterns, allow 15 goals against

Jan. 15th, 2023

A tough season continues for Anaheim with another bad week behind. The team keeps falling in the standings, recently aquired forward Marco Rossi (for the 1st round Pick 2023) didn't click in his first six games played, and GM Mohr ist still facing the question where to look for the issue to the missing success.

The Ducks started the week at Honda Center hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets. It took until late in the first period before Columbus started the scoring with two goals in almost two minutes. Anaheim leading-scorer Troy Terry cut the lead in half, assisted by Joel Edmundson and Sam Steel, heading into the break. The second period started slow before the Blue Jackets scored again in the middle of the period, with Anaheim doing the same just 25 seconds later. Maxime Comtois scored the goal, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Liam Arnsby. After the second break it was Arnsby himself scoring the 3-3 tying goal early in the period, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and Joel Edmundson. Just about five minutes later Columbus scored again, regained the lead, and scored three more goals within a minute late in the period. At the end the lack of focus resulted in a huge 7-3 loss for the Ducks.

Two days later Anaheim welcomed the Buffalo Sabres at Honda Center and showed a complete different face right of the start of the first period. With just two minutes played forwward Maxime Comtois scored the lead for the Ducks, assisted by Nick Jensen and Liam Arnsby. About five minutes later it was Troy Terry with his 20th goal of the season, assisted by Trevor Zegras, to give his team a 2-0 lead. Right after the next shift Maxime Comtois scored his second of the night, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Jakob Silfverberg, to increase the lead to three. After the first break it was a very slow second period and it took until two minutes before the break as Anaheim forward Colton Sissons scored, assisted by captain Rickard Rakell and Jackson Lacombe. Early in the third it was promising centerman Marco Rossi with his first goal as an Anaheim Duck, assisted by Nick Jensen and Rickard Rakell, to seal the deal and give his team a commanding 5-0 victory. Ducks goalie John Gibson saved all 35 shots and was awarded with his 5th shutout of the season.

The third game of the week took the Ducks to Gila River Arena to face off against one of the top teams in the league: the Arizona Coyotes. Anaheim couldn't imagne to start any better into the first period, scoring twice within the first ten minutes. Defenceman Hampus Lindholm started the scoring, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and Benoit-Olivier Groulx, and Jakob Silfverberg added another goal for a 2-0 lead, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Marco Rossi. It took until early in the second, before the Coyotes scored their first goal on the powerplay and later tied the game at two heading into the final break. Arizona finally turned the game around, scoring in the middle of the third and handing the Ducks a 3-2 loss - who were outshot 54 to 16 shots and still had a chance to get something out of the game.

For the final game of the week Anaheim went home to Honda Center to host the Winnipeg Jets. You could see that the team didn't have anything left in the tank after their last game in Arizona, allowing three goals in the first period, the first one just 17 seconds into the game. The second period started almost the same with Winnipeg scoring the fourth unanswered goal just 29 seconds after the break. The Ducks couldn't find a way to get on the scoreboard and the Jets just played it simple, heading into the final break. In the middle of the thid Winnipeg scored another goal and, after the final buzzer, handed Anaheim a tough 5-0 loss in front of their home crowd. (MM)

Anaheim starts slow into New Year with 1-1-0 record

Jan. 8th, 2023

After some tough weeks behind Anaheim had just two games scheduled for this week, with both newly aquired defenceman Joel Edmundson (Minnesota) and young centerman Marco Rossi (Detroit) in the lineup.

The Ducks welcomed the New York Rangers at Honda Center for the first game of the New Year 2023. There were no goals scored at all in the first and second period, so it took until early in the third, before Anaheim forward Sam Steel scored the leading goal, assisted by Troy Terry. With about two minutes left in the game it was again Steel with a goal, this time on the powerplay, assisted by Troy Terry and newly aquired Joel Edmundson. Despite being outshot 41 shots to 27 Anaheim goalie Robin Lehner managed to keep the Rangers off the scoreboard for his second shutout of the season and earned his team a 2-0 win.

Two days later the Ducks went to TD Garden to visit the Boston Bruins. It took until the middle of the first period before the Bruins scored the first goal of the game. About five minutes later they added another goal for a 2-0 lead after the first period. Anaheim couldn't manage to get notable scoring chances, why it wasn't a big surprise Boston scored again late in the second period, before heading into the break. The hosts added another goal on the powerplay in the final period and handed the Ducks a well-deserved 4-0 loss. It was the fourth time this season Anaheim didn't score a goal. (MM)

Ducks fall in standings, 11 points behind wildcard spot

Jan. 1st, 2023

Anaheim was hoping for a positive ending of the year 2022 with three games last week, all in front of their home crowd. But things didn't work out the way the team wanted, losing every game and finishing home games in December with a 3-4-1 record.

The Ducks had three days of before facing the Boston Bruins at Honda Center, who had signed a new GM just a few days ago. Boston scored early in the first period, before Anaheim forward Troy Terry tied the game on assists by Jamie Drysdale and Maxime Comtois. After the first break it was all Bruins with three unanswered goals in about eight minutes, giving them a huge momentum change. Late in the second it was Ducks forward Sam Steel on the powerplay, cutting the guests lead to two goals, assisted by Troy Terry. Sam Steel scored another one in the third period, again assisted by Troy Terry and also by defenceman Hampus Lindholm. Anaheim took the risk and goalie John Gibson out of the net, but Boston scored again on the empty net to hand the Ducks a 5-3 loss at the end.

For the second game of the week the Tampa Bay Lightning came to visit Honda Center and managed to take the 1-0 lead early in the first period. Anaheim played a very bad first period and continued that way in the second, when the Lightning scored another goal with just 35 seconds into the period and a third one late in the period. Ducks defenceman Jake Bean somehow managed to score the lone goal for his team with just 13 seconds left before the final break. Forwards Maxime Comtois and Troy Terry assisted on the goal. Late in the third Anaheim was on the powerplay, took goalie John Gibson out of the net (again), but in the final second of the game Tampa Bay scored the empty-netter while being shorthanded and the Ducks lost 4-1 after the final buzzer.

Anaheim had no time to lick their wounds, with the New York Islanders waiting for them at Honda Center the next day. The first goal of the game again went to the visiting team, scoring in the middle of the first period. The Ducks were pressing hard and you could feel they badly wanted to at least win one game that week - but until early in the third period there were no more goals on the scoreboard. And early in the third it was again New York with their second goal of the game, before Anaheim finally got rewarded for their effort. Team-leading scorer Troy Terry scored twice for his team and Maxime Comtois added a goal, too - two of the three goals were scored on the powerplay. It took until late in the period before the Islanders managed to tie the game one more time, but Ducks forward Troy Terry completed his hattrick and earned his team a well deserved 4-3 victory in front of their home crowd. (MM)

Anaheim unlucky in tough week, going 0-3-0

Dec. 25th, 2022

The Ducks played good last week, that's for sure. But to get rewarded with much needed points that's just not enough. Tight matches that could have also ended the other way around, a coin flip, bad luck - whatever you might call it.

Anaheim played host to the Vegas Golden Knights at Honda Center, hoping to at least steal a point froim the first placed team in the Western Conference. It took until late in the first period, before the Golden Knights scored the 1-0 lead. Early in the second period it was Ducks forward Brayden Tracey who tied the game, assisted by defenceman Jake Bean. Later Vegas regained the lead before heading into the final break. The third period was all offense with the Golden Knights scoring again early in the period, before Anaheim defenceman Jamie Drysdale scored the second goal for his team on the powerplay, assisted by Brett Leason and Jackson Lacombe. Vegas scored another goal with just two and a half minutes left in the game, before defenceman Jacob Larsson scored his first goal of the season for Anaheim, assisted by Maxime Comtois and Troy Terry. With just four seconds left on the clock the Golden Knights sealed the deal with an empty netter and handed the Ducks a tough 5-3 loss at the end.

Just two days later it was the Edmonton Oilers, who came to visit Honda Center and it didn't take them long to score. With just 20 seconds on the clock the Oilers scored the 1-0 lead on the powerplay, right after the face-off with a Ducks defenceman Hampuis Lindholm in the box after just 14 seconds played. Overall the first period was played pretty tough, with a 10 minutes misconduct on both sides. In the second period Edmonton took control and managed to score two more goals for a commanding 3-0 lead. But with just 20 seconds after the third goal it was Anaheim forward Colton Sissons, who finally scored his first goal of the season since joining his new team late October. Both Benoit-Olivier Groulx and captain Rickard Rakell assisted on it.  In the middle of the third period it was Ducks forward Brayden Tracey who scored on the powerplay, assisted by Trevor Zegras. Despite a huge comeback Anaheim couldn't prevent losing 3-2 with the final buzzer.

Just shortly after the last game Anaheim took the flight to Prudential Arena to face off against the New Jersey Devils. The team couldn't have started the match any better, scoring the 1-0 lead by Benoit-Oliver Groulx, assisted by Jacob Larsson and Liam Arnsby, and adding another goal on the scoreboard by defenceman Jamie Drysdale, again assisted by Liam Arnsby. The Devils managed to score late in the first period to cut the lead in half before the first break. It took until the middle of the second before New Jersey scored again, twice in less than three minutes. The Ducks were not able to turn the game around with almost half the game time still on the clock. Instead the frustration level grew strong, leading to Maxime Comtois receiving a 10 minutes misconduct late in the third period and Anaheim losing 3-2, for the second time in just two days. (MM)

Ducks getting better with 6-2-2 record in last ten

Dec. 18th, 2022

Anaheim is staying on a run, after the third positive week in a row. The team is turning things around with just two regulation losses in their last ten games and crawling back up in the standings.

The Ducks travelled to Xcel Energy Center for the rematch with the Minnesota Wild, who they defeated just a few days ago in Anaheim. Minnesota scored the leading-goal early in the first period, while Ducks forward Maxime Comtois tied the game in the middle of the period, scoring his 10th goal of the season on the powerplay, assisted by Troy Terry. After the first break the Wild scored again, and in the final minute of the second period it was again Maxime Comtois on the powerplay for Anaheim, again assisted by Troy Terry and Sam Steel. There were no more goals in the third, so the game went into overtime, were Minnesota scored early and handed the Ducks a 3-2 loss in extra time

Anaheim returned home to face off against the St. Louis Blues at Honda Center. The first period turned out to be pretty entertaining for the crowd, with a total of seven goals scored. The Blues started the scoring in the very first minute of the period, before the Ducks scored three unanswered goals within five minutes by Jakob Silfverberg, Maxime Comtois and again Silfverberg. St. Louis added two more goals to tie the game, before it was Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras with the leading-goal, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Jakob Silfverberg. After the first break the Blues tied the game again in the middle of the second period, before Ducks leading-scorer Troy Terry regained the lead for his team, assisted by Maxime Comtois and Jackson Lacombe. It took until the middle of the third, before St. Louis tied the game once again, taking the game to overtime and later into the shootout, where they scored again and gave Anaheim a 6-5 loss after the skills competition.

Just two days later the Ducks welcomed the Dallas Stars at Honda Center and were hoping for two more points this week, this time best in regulation. The Stars scored early in the first period and showed, that they were ready to spoil the party. But just 22 seconds later Anaheim tied the game with forward Brayden Tracey scoring the goal, assisted by Boone Jenner and captain Rickard Rakell. Later Troy Terry added another one on the powerplay, assisted by Maxime Comtois and Jake Bean, before Maxime Comtois himself scored the 3-1 lead heading into the first break. Forward Brayden Tracey and again defenceman Jake Bean assisted on it. Nothing happened in the second period so it took until early in the third, before Ducks forward Trevor Zegras scored another goal for his team, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and rookie Liam Arnsby. With the final buzzer Anaheim finally earned two points and a 4-1 win in regulation. (MM)

Anaheim confident after second 2-1-0 week in a row

Dec. 11th, 2022

After the tough decision waiving both veteran defencemen Cam Fowler (claimed by Detroit) and Jake Muzzin (claimed by Los Angeles), Anaheim was looking forward to carry the load on different shoulders. So far the team seems to have understood the message sent by managers and coaches.

The Ducks took the trip to BB&T Center and visited the Florida Panthers, 2nd placed team in the Atlantic Division. It took until late in the first period before the Panthers scored the 1-0 lead on the powerplay and heading into the first intermission. In the middle of the second it was Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras who tied the game, assisted by Jake Bean and Tomas Tatar. Sadly, with just 11 seconds left on the clock, Florida regained the lead with another powerplay goal. The Panthers added two more goals in the third to hand the Ducks a 4-1 loss at the end.

Anaheim returned to the West Coast to face off against their rivals, the Los Angeles Kings, at Staples Center. The Kings scored early in the first period, and took a 1-0 lead on the powerplay. The Ducks stayed focused earning the tying goal just a few minutes later, scored by forward Boone Jenner, assisted by Hampus Lindholm and Rickard Rakell. With less than two minutes left on the clock Troy Terry gave Anaheim the lead on the powerplay, assisted by Rickard Rakell and Jake Bean. After the first break it took until the middle of the second, before Ducks forward Trevor Zegras added another goal for his team, with rookie Liam Arnsby and Jackson Lacombe assisting on it. With just 24 seconds left in the period the Kings managed to close the gap, scoring their second goal of the night. In the final period Anaheim palyed strong and dominated the rest of the game, with Trevor Zegras scoring his second goal for the night, captain Rickard Rakell adding another one and rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale sealing the deal and a 6-2 win over Los Angeles.

The final game of the week was played at Honda center against the Minnesota Wild. In front of their home crowd the Ducks played their best defensive game since having hired GM Mohr in early January that year. There was no scoring at all in regulation, so it was Anaheim center Sam Steel, who gave his team the win with less than two minutes left in overtime. Defenceman Hampus Lindholm and team-leading scorer Troy Terry assited on the goal. Goalie John Gibson was named "First Star of the Game", earning his 4th shutout of the season and giving the Ducks a 1-0 win at the end. (MM)

Ducks earn huge wins after stabilizing bad defence

Dec. 4th, 2022

Anaheim had some bigger changes to make on their defence after last weeks results, with both Cam Fowler and Jake Muzzin being put on waivers. On the other hand defencemen Jacob Larsson and rookie Mathew Hill had been called up from San Diego and both were in the lineup this week.

The Ducks visited Rogers Arena to face off against the Vancouver Canucks the second time in ten days. Anaheim team-leading scorer Troy Terry scored the first goal of the game early in the period, assisted by Sam Steel. Later it was veteran forward Tomas Tatar with the second goal for his team, assisted by defenceman Jake Bean. Troy Terry added another one with his 10th goal of the saeson, again assisted by Jake Bean. Both teams went into the first break before the Ducks came back and continued their dominance. Tomas Tatar scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Trevor Zegras. Captain Rickard Rakell added another one, assisted by called-up defenceman Jacob Larsson, and Brayden Tracey. And just 8 seconds later it was Brayden Tracey himself with the 6-0, assited by Jamie Drysdale and Radek Faksa. In the third period Anaheim took the foot off the gas, scored just one more goal by Jamie Drysdale, assisted by Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg, to seal the season-high 7-0 win over Vancouver.

With a lot of self-confidence Anaheim went home to Honda Center to play the Pittsburgh Penguins. In the middle of the period it was Ducks forward Trevor Zegras with the 1-0 lead, assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and called-up defenceman Mathew Hill. After the first break it was again Zegras with his second goal, assisted by Radek Faksa and Brayden Tracey. Despite many penalties being called Anaheim managed to keep the Penguins away from the scoreboard, going into the final break. Late in the third it was Ducks forward Troy Terry scoring on the powerplay, assisted by Sam Steel and Maxime Comtois. With just about two minutes on the clock Pittsburgh finally managed to score, took Anaheim goalie John Gibson his second shutout in back-to-back games, but couldn't prevent the Ducks from winning 3-1 at the end.

For the last game of the week the Ducks took the flight back to Canada to visit the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome. Early in the period it was Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras scoring the first goal of the game, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and Hampus Lindholm. Calgary didn't seem to be impressed at all, scoring twice in less than four minutes and taking that 2-1 lead into the first break. It took until late into the second before the Ducks scored the game-tying goal by Brayden Tracey, assisted by Jacob Larsson and Jackson Lacombe. The Flames, again not impressed, took the lead again shortly after that before going into the final period. Anaheim didn't manage to score in the third period, losing 3-2 to Calgary with the final buzzer. (MM)

Anaheim loses three out of four, falls to 26th in league

Nov. 27th, 2022

"We've reached a point where we can't talk about how and when to make the playoffs anymore.", GM Matthias Mohr told the media "Our focus will be to strengthen our defence, stop the bleeding and give our young guys an environment where they can make progress in their development.".

The Ducks started the week in Western Canada at Rogers Arena, visiting the Vancouver Canucks. Late in the first period it was forward Maxime Comtois who gave Anaheim the 1-0 lead, assisted by Jamie Drysdale and Boone Jenner. After the break the Canucks tied the game early in the period before Troy Terry scored on the powerplay for the Ducks, assisted by Rickard Rakell and Sam Steel. After the second break Vancouver managed to score twice within just 7 seconds to not just turn around the game, but also hand Anaheim a  3-2 loss at the end.

Back home at Honda Center the Ducks hosted one of the hotetst teams in the league and back-to-back champions Colorado Avalanche. The guests outshot Anaheim 62 to 20 shots and outplayed their opponents pretty much from start to finish. Colorado scored twice in the first period, before rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale scored the lone goal for the Ducks early in the second, assisted by Liam Arnsby and Brayden Tracey. The Avs scored four more goals in the period, went into the final break with a commanding 6-1 lead and had mercy in the third scoring just one more goal. Anaheim left the ice with hanging heads and a devastating 7-1 loss.

Anaheim took a break of two days before heading to Bell MTS Place to play the Winnipeg Jets. It took until the middle of the first period before the Jets scored the leading goal. Ducks rookie forward Liam Arnsby tied the game about two minutes later, assisted by Brayden Tracey and Jake Bean, before Winnipeg scored again with 54 seconds left in the period. Early in the second the Jets added two more goals within two minutes and went into the final break with a  4-1 lead. The hosts added another one early in the third, while Tomas Tatar scored the final goal of the game for Anaheim, assited by Brendan Guhle and Jamie Drysdale. Still the Ducks lost the game 5-2 at the end.

With a record of 0-3-0 the Ducks returned home to play the Nashville Predators at Honda Center. The team was looking for some kind of redemption in front of their home crowd, but still Nashville scored the first goal in the middle of the period. Anaheim tied the game shortly after that, with a short-handed goal by defenecman Jackson Lacombe, assisted by Jake Bean. Sadly his team couldn't manage to take the score into the first break, because the Preds added the 2-1 leading goal with just 23 seconds before the buzzer. The Ducks returned to the ice pretty angry, took control of the game and managed to score two more goals in the second period. Defenceman Jamie Drysdale scored early in the period, assisted by Maxime Comtois and captain Rickard Rakell - and about ten minutes later Rickard Rakell scored himself, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Jackson Lacombe. Early in the third it was Sam Steel, assisted by Troy Terry, to give Anaheim a lone 4-2 victory out of this weeks matchups. (MM)

Ducks earn three points, hope to stop the "bleeding"

Nov. 20th, 2022

After four days of needed rest Anaheim had only two games to play this week and were hoping to get as many points as possible out of those matchups. The team is in the middle of a six-game home stand and in desperate need of a turnaround.

The Ducks played host at Honda Center to the Chicago Blackhawks, who are in a  quite similar position in the league standings. It took until late in the first period before Anaheim captain Rickard Rakell scored the 1-0 lead, assisted by Boone Jenner. After the first break the Ducks managed to pull away, with goals by Trevor Zegras, Maxime Comtois and Sam Steel. Team-leading scorer Troy Terry assisted on all three goals. Early in the third period it was forward Tomas Tatar who scored the 5-0 for Anaheim, assisted by youngster Benoit-Olivier Groulx. With just 71 seconds left in the game Chicago forward Patrick Kane ruined the shutout for Ducks goalie John Gibson, but of course couldn't change Anaheim winning 5-1 at the end of the day.

Two days later the Ducks welcomed the Ottawa Senators at Honda Center and were hoping to start a first little winning-streak. The first period was most exciting for the audience, seeing both teams score twice within just six minutes apart. Ottawa scored the leading goal, while shortly after that Anaheim forward Troy Terry tied the game, assisted by Sam Steel and Jake Muzzin. Just about two minutes later the Senators took the lead, again, and Ducks forward Boone Jenner tying it shortly after that - again. Defenceman Hampus Lindholm and forward Maxime Comtois assisted on the goal. The second and third period didn't change anything on the scoreboard, so the game had to be decided in overtime. With just 21 seconds left in overtime Ottawa scored the game-winning goal and handed Anaheim a tough 3-2 loss in extra time. (MM)

Anaheim can't keep pace, go 4-5-1 in last 10 games

Nov. 13th, 2022

With a quarter of the season already in the books the Ducks might have to realize that they are simply not good enough to compete for a playoff spot, yet. The team is lacking on both offense and defence, making it tough to get rolling and start a winning-streak.

The first match of the week took Anaheim to Staples Center to face off against their biggest rivals, the Los Angeles Kings. Both teams pretty much even in lack of scoring, so it took until late in the first period before the Kings scored the the 1-0 lead. Not much happened in the second period, despite few penalties to the Ducks. At 18 seconds in the third Los Angeles scored again and since Anaheim still couldn't put the puck in the net themselves, they took a 2-0 loss at the end.

Back home at Honda Center the Ducks played host to the Dallas Stars. Early in the first period the Stars scored the 1-0 lead and managed to take it into the first break. Anaheim was pressing hard and finally scored the tying goal three minutes before the second break. Sam Steel took a pass by Brayden Tracey on the powerplay and buried the puck inside the net. Just 80 seconds later it was Jakob Silfverberg, assisted by Liam Arnsby, who gave the Ducks the first lead of the game.  In the final period it was again Sam Steel with his second goal of the night, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Trevor Zegras. Dallas was able to score one more goal later on the powerplay but couldn't prevent Anaheim from winning 3-2 after the final buzzer.

With the last game of the week the Ducks welcomed the Vegas Golden Knights at Honda Center, who were sitting in first place in the Western Conference before that night. Despite being outshot 40 to 23 shots Anaheim was able to play two periods of solid hockey. It took until the final minute of the first period before Vegas scored to 1-0 lead. Early in the second period it was Tomas Tatar who tied the game for the Ducks, assisted by Hampus Lindholm and Jakob Silfverberg. Sadly the Golden Knights were not impressed at all, scoring twice the next 90 seconds. Just 10 seconds before the second break it was Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras, who gave his team hope with his 5th goal of the season, both Jake Bean and Troy Terry assisted on it. In the third period things went completely wrong for the Ducks, allowing four more goals in less than 10 minutes and losing 7-2 at home. (MM)

Ducks still searching for consistency after 1-1-1 week

Nov. 6th, 2022

The first month of the season is in the books and Anaheim is still lacking consistency and searching for answers to that. After 16 games played the teams record is just 7-8-1 (15 points), 7th place in the Pacific Division and 6 points behind the final wildcard spot.

For the first match of the week the Ducks hosted the Chicago Blackhawks at Honda Center and got outshot 34 to 17 shots at the end. Despite Anaheim rookie forward Liam Arnsby scoring the first goal of the game (assisted by Jakob Silfverberg and Jake Bean) early in the first period, it was all Blackhawks after that. Chicago tied it in the middle of the first and added two more goals in each of the following two periods. The Ducks had to leave the ice with a tough but well-deserved 5-1 loss.

The next Anaheim took the trip to Canadian Tire Centre to face off against the Ottawa Senators. Again it was rookie forward Liam Arnsby with the first goal of the game in the middle of the first period, assisted by Cam Fowler and Sam Steel. But this time the Ducks played a much better game, were focused on both offense and defense, and able to score the insurance marker in the middle of the second period. Defenceman Jake Bean took a shot on the powerplay, assisted by Maxime Comtois. Since nothing more happened in the final period this turned out to be the final score, with Anaheim winning 2-0.

The Ducks finished their Canada trip with a visit to Scotia Saddledome matching up against the Calgary Flames. It turned out to be a high-scoring but also thrilling game overall. It took until late in the first period before Calgary scored the 1-0 lead and took it into the first break. In the second period the Flames were able to add another goal on the powerplay, before Anaheim rookie Jamie Drysdale scored on the powerplay himself, assisted by Tomas Tatar and Jackson Lacombe. After just three goals in the first two periods, the third period turned out to be completely crazy, with a total of seven goals combined being put in eachothers net. The Ducks tied the game 2-2 with just 32 seconds into the period, with defenceman Cam Fowler getting the goal. The score went back and forth again a few minutes later when Anaheim captain Rickard Rackell scored, before the Flames added two more goals on their side. Ducks forward Trevor Zegras scored in the middle of the period and with just three seconds left on the clock it was Troy Terry short-handed, tying the game at five and assisted by Jake Bean and Boone Jenner. Overtime flew by without a goal and it took until the 8th shootout round before Anaheim had to face a 6-5 loss. (MM)

Anaheim with 6-4-0 record in their last 10 games

Oct. 30th, 2022

The Ducks are still working hard to find their game after going 2-1-0 last week. Small adjustments to the team are still part of the process to find success on the defense.

Anaheim visited PPG Paints Arena to face off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a hard battled game with both teams playing very focused. That's the reason why it took until early in the third period before the scoring startet, and it was Tomas Tatar who gave the Ducks the 1-0 lead on the powerplay, assisted by Jackson Lacombe and Sam Steel. Forward Brayden Tracey scored another goal, assisted by Jake Bean and Troy Terry, to give Anaheim a 2-0 victory at the end.

Just two days later the Ducks moved on to American Airlines Arena to meet with the Dallas Stars. The hosts started the scoring in the middle of the first period and added another one just 31 seconds before the break. Anaheim couldn't manage to create any goals out of their scoring chances, so the Stars continued their mission and scored two more goals early in the second, one on the powerplay, to take a commanding 4-0 lead into the final period. And with another two goals "Groundhog Day" was perfect for the Ducks, losing the game 6-0 to Dallas after the final buzzer.

The next day it was all about redemption when Anaheim hosted the Montreal Canadiens at Honda Center. Things started well after Trevor Zegras opened the scoring on the powerplay, assisted by Troy Terry, to give the Ducks the 1-0 lead in the middle of the first period. Despite Montreal scoring the tying goal later in the period the Ducks felt much more comfortable with their game and took that feeling into the break and the second period. Forward Jakob Silfverberg regained the lead for Anaheim, assisted by Tomas Tatar and rookie Liam Arnsby before a few minutes later it was defenceman Jake Bean with the insurance marker, assited by newly aquired Brett Leason and Benoit-Olivier Groulx. With this two-goal lead for the Ducks the teams were heading into the final break. Both teams didn't want to risk too much in the third, why it took until the middle of the period before Maxime Comtois scored his team-leading 7th goal on the powerplay, assisted by Troy Terry and Jake Bean. About two minutes later it was the captain himself, Rickard Rakell, assisted by Maxime Comtois and Jackson Lacombe, giving Anaheim a 5-1 win in front of their home crowd. (MM)

Ducks with 2-2-0 record, still lacking defensive work

Oct. 23rd, 2022

After playing four games in six days the Ducks managed to win half of them, but had terrible results on defense with 19 goals allowed. Adjustments to coaching and tactics will be part of next weeks training sessions.

Anaheim played the first game of the week at Honda Center hosting the St. Louis Blues. The guests dominated the game from the beginning outshooting the Ducks 42 to 18 overall. St. Louis scored the leading goal early in the first, added three more in the second period and another two in the third - all on even strength and with six different scorers. For some reason Anaheim goalie John Gibson played the full 60 minutes in net and took the 6-0 loss all by himself.

The Ducks took the flight to Capital One Arena to meet with the Washington Capitals. It took until the middle of the second period before Anaheim forward Maxime Comtois scored the 1-0 lead and his 5th goal of the season, assisted by Hampus Lindholm and Boone Jenner. After the final break it was Boone Jenner himself who scored the second goal for the Ducks, assited by Jake Muzzin and Trevors Zegras. The Captials came back with a goal in the middle of the third, before Anaheim defenseman Jake Bean scored at 18:35, assisted by Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry - and  again 13 seconds before the final buzzer on an empty netter, assisted by Brayden Tracey and again Trevor Zegar - to give the Ducks a 4-1 victory.

After a two day break Anaheim traveled to KeyBank Center to face off against the Buffalo Sabres. The Ducks had a great start with Troy Terry scoring just 28 seconds into the game, assisted by rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale and Brayden Tracey. But Buffalo came back and scored three unanswered goals within four minutes before it was Anaheim center Trevor Zegras who scored the second goal for his team, assisted by Troy Terry. The second period was all Anaheim Ducks, with Maxime Comtois, Brayden Tracey and Jakob Silfverberg giving their team a huge two-goal lead before the last period. The Sabres scored the final goal of the game early in the period, but at the end it was the Ducks winning it 5-4 on the road.

The next day the Ducks went on to Amalie Arena for this weeks final match against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The hosts started quickly with two goals in the first 86 seconds of the game, but Anaheim wasn't shocked at all scoring goals from defenceman Hampus Lindholm and rookie forward Luke Tuch, who tied the game with both their first goal of the season. At 19:30 of the first period the Lightning took the lead again before heading into the break. Almost as fast as in the first Tampa Bay scored another two goals just two minutes apart, giving the Ducks a huge hill to climb. It was defenceman Jake Muzzin, also with his first of the season, who scored the 5-3 for Anaheim before again the Lightning scored late in the period, taking a huge three goal lead into the final break. Both teams seemed a bit exhausted after all the scoring, why it took until the middle of the third before Tampa Bay again scored two quick goals - this time with just 42 seconds apart. The Ducks were losing hope, but still managed to score late in the period with goals by Troy Terry and Benoit-Olivier Groulx - and another 1st goal of the season on the scoreboard, with Anaheim losing 8-5 in a crazy match. (MM)

Anaheim fights back wih 2-1-0 record in second week

Oct. 16th, 2022

The Anaheim Ducks have found a way to win, after going 0-3-0 in the first week of the season and losing two important players to long-term injuries. Still the newly aquired roster depth is giving enough hope for a successful season.

The Ducks played their home opener at Honda Center against the Nashville Predators and it took until the middle of the first period before Nashville scored the 1-0 lead. But about two minutes later it was Anaheim forward Brayden Tracey with his first goal of the season to tie the game, assisted by rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale. After the break it was another rookie in Liam Arnsby who scored the 2-1 lead for the Ducks on a breakaway. The Predators couldn't find a way to score leading to two more goals for Anaheim by captain Rickard Rakell on the powerplay, and Maxime Comtois into the empty net to win the game 4-1.

The next day Anaheim was heading to T-Mobile Arena to visit the Vegas Golden Knights for a matchup that turned out to be a goalies nightmare. A total of eight goals were scored in the first period with Vegas taking the lead three times and the Ducks tying the game three times, before the hosts scored two more goals heading into the break. Trevor Zegras, Rickard Rakell and Brayden Tracey scored the goals for Anaheim. In the second period both teams took their foot of the gas a bit before the Golden Knights scored on the powerplay in the middle of the period and again about two minutes before the break to take a 7-3 lead. In the third period Vegas added another goal on the powerplay before Ducks rookie Jamie Drysdale scored his first career goal and the final one of the game with the Ducks losing 8-4.

For the final game of the week the Ducks went home to Honda Center to face off against the Winnipeg Jets. Despite being outshot 43 to 26 shots Anaheim managed to win the game because of a perfect night by forward Troy Terry.  The 25-year old rightwing, who spent half of last season on injury reserve, defeated the Jets all by himself that night - scoring all three goals and adding a natural hattrick to his resume. It took until the start of the second period before his first goal, eight seconds into the period, and the second of Terrys goals came pretty quick just eleven seconds later. Center Trevor Zegras got an assist on one goal and Brayden Tracey assisted on both of Terrys goals. The Ducks took a lot of penalties in the second period but stood strong on their PK going into the final break and period. At 17:43 on the clock Troy Terry clinched his hattrick after assists from Jackson Lacombe and Jake Muzzin, to give Anaheim a 3-0 win over Winnipeg. (MM)

Ducks start season 0-3-0, Kase and Ritchie on LTIR

Oct. 9th, 2022

With the first week of the season in the books the Anaheim Ducks find themselves not just in the bottom of the league, but also lost forwards Ondrej Kase and Nick Ritchie injured long term.

Anaheim visited the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena for the very first game of the new campaign. Arizona scored early in the first to take the lead and added two more goals in the second, before Ducks forward Maxime Comtois scored with 11 seconds left on the clock, assisted by Jake Bean and Sam Steel. Early in the third Comtois scored another one after Jackson Lacombe and Sam Steel started the play. In a  tight matchup Coyotes forward Clayton Keller scored the insurance marker at 16:07, before Alex Ovechkin sealed the deal with an empty net goal and handed Anaheim a 5-2 loss at the end of the night.

Without forwards Ondrej Kase and Nick Ritchie in the lineup, who both were injured in the last game, the Ducks went to Madison Square Garden to face off against the New York Rangers. The first period was all offense on both teams with Anaheim taking a 2-0 lead, scoring goals from forwards Maxime Comtois and Yaroslav Likhachyov, who was called up from San Diego earlier the day. After that the Ducks somehow lost focus, which New York took advantage of to score three in a row before the end of the period. The Rangers added two more goals in the second period and another one early in the third, to make it six unanswered goals overall. Anaheim forward Sam Steel scored the final goal of the game with the Ducks losing 6-3 after the final buzzer.

Anaheim went back to Gila River Arena, for this weeks second matchup against the Arizona Coyotes. The game was way more defensive minded than the first meeting, so it took until early in the second period before Arizona started the scoring shorthanded after a goal by Derek Stepan. In the final minute of the period they added another one by Matias Maccelli to take a 2-0 lead into the final break. At 07:42 in the third it was Stepan with his second goal of the night to give the Coyotes a commanding lead. Later Ducks forward Boone Jenner scored after getting the assist from defenceman Jake Muzzin, but couldn't prevent Anaheim from losing 3-1 to Arizona. (MM)

Arnsby and Drysdale impress at start of Pre Season

Sep. 26th, 2022

A long summer finally came to an end, when the Anaheim Ducks invited to training camp and the first pre season matchups of the 2022-2023 campaign. The main goal is clear: Making the playoffs.

Anaheim went from coast to coast, to visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden for their first match since April 10th. New York started the scoring on a powerplay late in the first period. Early in the second Boone Jenner scored the tying goal, assisted by Silfverberg and Groulx. The Rangers regained the lead in the middle of the period and took the score into the final break. Early in the third it was 12th overall pick Liam Arnsby who tied the game for Anaheim, again. Groulx got his second assist of the game and newly aquired defenseman Hollowell got an assist, too. After that the game went totally crazy with the Rangers scoring 5 unanswered goals within 15 minutes, handing Anaheim a 7-2 loss.

The Ducks went home to Honda Center, facing the Arizona Coyotes. Despite almost equal shots on goal Anaheim couldn't find a way past Coyotes goalie Anders Nilsson. Arizona took the lead in the middle of the first period, scored twice again in the second and a fourth and final time late in the third. At the end the Ducks had to leave the ice with a 4-0 loss in front of their home crowd.

And because it's so much fun to travel coast to coast twice a week, Anaheim went right back east to visit the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena. Liam Arnsby scored his second goal of the pre seasson to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead early in the game. A few minutes later the Lightning scored twice to take the lead, before Maxime Comtois tied the game at two for Anaheim on the powerplay. Both teams scored again in the period - rookie defenceman Jamie Drysdale for the Ducks. In the middle of the second period Tampa Bay took advantage with three unanswered goals and a commanding 6-3 lead before the last period. They scored another one early in the third, before Anaheim defenceman Jacksom Lacombe scored the final goal of the game and his team losing 7-4 with the final buzzer.

For this weeks final matchup the Ducks flew to Alberta, Canada to match up against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place. It took until the middle of the first period before Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras scored the first goal of the game. But just four minutes later Edmonton tied it and took the score to the first break. In the middle of the second the Oilers scored the 2-1 lead and added another goal early in the third period, before Ducks defenceman Jamie Drysdale scored his second goal of the pre season. It was a close game but still Anaheim lost 3-2 at the end. (MM)
