Anaheim ends season with 2-1-1 record, 12th in West

Apr. 10th, 2022

A week ago it was almost official, that the Ducks wouldn't make the palyoffs this year. But there was still some hockey to play and the team of parting long-time captain Ryan Getzlaf did a pretty good job at the end, for both team and fans.

Anaheim took the trip to Capital One Arena to face the Washington Capitals in their final road game of the season. Washington started the scoring early in the first period, before Tomas Tatar tied the game for the Ducks at 15:57 on the powerplay. In the second period it was Ondrej Kase to score his 25th goal of the season and the lead for Anaheim. The third period was all offensive hockey, with the Capitals scoring three goals overall and the Ducks adding two goals on their own by Adam Henrique and Jake Muzzin. At the end it was Washington to score at 01:08 in overtime and hand the Ducks a 5-4 loss.

The day after the Ducks went home to Honda Center to play the visiting Boston Bruins, the second seeded team in the Eastern Conference. Despite being outhot 48 to 27 shots Anaheim palyed a surprisingly focused and effective game. Ondrej Kase and Sam Steel scored for the Ducks early in the first period and took a 2-1 lead into the first break. Not much happened in the second period, but the Bruins tying the game. In the third period it were again Ondrej Kase and Sam Steel who both scored powerplay goals with just 43 seconds in between to give Anaheim a two-goal lead. In the final minute of the game it was Nick Ritchie who sealed the deal for the Ducks and earned them a 5-2 win.

Two days later the Pittsburgh Penguins came to visit the city of Anaheim and they were on fire. Pittsburgh took a two-goal lead in the first period, before Ducks forward Derek Grant scored his first goal of the season after being called up by Anaheim. In the second period the Penguins added two more goals, one on the powerplay and one shorthanded, before entering the final break. The Ducks had absolutely nothing they could throw in and so Pittsburgh added two more goals in the third period and Anaheim lost the game 6-1 at the end.

The Ducks took three days off before hosting the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center for their final game of the 2021-2022 season. Anaheim took a 2-1 lead into the first break after two goals of defenceman Jake Muzzin, who scored a total of 5 goals in his past 11 games and a career-high 15 goals total this year. In the second period the Canucks turned the game around scoring goals by forwards Bo Horvat and Andrej Svechnikov. At 16:54 in the third period it was called up forward Jack Kopacka who tied the game for the Ducks and took the game to overtime, where defenceman Hampus Lindholm buried the puck in the net and gave his team a 4-3 win. Ducks take huge loss against Calgary, miss playoffs

Apr. 3rd, 2022

With the start of the final two weeks in regular season Anaheim believed in their chances of making it to the post season with five of six games playing at home. But hope vanished with two losses against both Washington and Calgary.

The Washington Capitals came to visit Anaheim at Honda Center with no pressure at all being in the bottom of the league. Washington led the game 2-0 early in the second period, before young forward Benoit-Olivier Groulx scored his very first goal of the season for the Ducks, assisted by former waiver claims Jordan Kyrou and Radek Faksa. Washington added two more goals in the third and Adam Henrique scored another one for Anaheim - who lost 4-2 at the end of the game.

After three days of rest the Calgary Flames came to town and really were on fire that night. The Ducks had high hopes in this matchup but at the end played their worst game of the season so far. Calgary scored a total of seven unanswered goals, six of them in the first period, before forward Nick Ritchie scored the lone goal for Anaheim at 15:47 in the third period. The fans in the stands were not amused at all, seeing their team fall to an embarassing 7-1 loss. (MM)

Anaheim with 2-1-0 record, crazy game against Blues

Mar. 27th, 2022

It's been two months, since the Ducks have played a positive week. With a 2-1-0 record Anaheim is ready for the final weeks of regular season, with five of six games at home. There is also a must-win match against the Calgary Flames if the team wants to take the small chance of still making the playoffs.

The Ducks took the trip to Enterprise Center to play the St. Louis Blues in a really crazy matchup. The first period was great entertainment for the audience with both teams scoring three goals in alternation. Defenceman Jake Muzzin started the scoring for Anaheim and Ryand Getzlaf and Jackson Lacombe also scored the temporary leading goal. After a goalless second period the teams sticked to their plan with Maxime Comtois scoring another lead for the Ducks and the Blues tying it again in the middle of the third. The game went to a shootout, where it was youngster Trevor Zegras who sealed the deal for Anaheim winning it 5-4 .

Two days later Anaheim visited Rogers Arena and the Vancouver Canucks in a must-win matchup to keep the chances alive of making the playoffs. The game wasn't really exciting but very focused on tactical situations, not making the first mistake, staying focused on that one goal to the win. And that's pretty much what happened late in the second period, when youngster Trevor Zegras scored his 19th goal of the season for the Ducks, unassisted on a  breakaway. Anaheim goalie Malcolm Subban saved all 28 shots and earned his third shutout of the season and his team won 1-0.

The Ducks returned home to Honda Center to start their first of two three-game home stands against the Chicago Blackhawks. It took until the early minutes of the second period when Anaheim started the scoring with goals from Brayden Tracey and captain Ryan Getzlaf. Chicago answered with two goals to take the tie to the final break, before scoring the lead at 04:01 in the third. In the final minutes the Ducks had the chance to tie the game on the powerplay, but the Blackhawks managed to score a shorty and hand Anaheim a bad 4-2 loss. (MM)

Ducks getting better despite 1-2-1 record last week

Mar. 20th, 2022

Anaheim had another intense week with a total of four games, three on the road, and some bad losses as well. Points left behind, that will probably have a huge impact on whether the team is making the playoffs or not.

At first the Ducks went to T-Mobile Arena to face the still young rival Vegas Golden Knights, who also want to make the playoffs this year. Anaheim got outshot 43 to 26 shots, was down 3-0 after two periods played, but showed strong effort in the third period  to tie the game and take it to overtime - before losing 4-3 at the end. Young defenceman Jackson Lacombe scored his 11th goal of the season and right wing Ondrej Kase added another two goals.

The day after Anaheim took a visit to Gila River Arena, playing the Arizona Coyotes, who are also in the same position as the Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights: playoff race. Despite being outshot again with 39 to 22 shots, Anaheim managed to start the scoring in the first period. Newly aquired defenceman MacKenzie Weegar scored his first goal of the season late in the period, with Rickard Rakell assisting on it. The second period was all Arizona, scoring three unanswered goals and taking the lead into the third period. The Ducks came back with a powerplay goal by Rickard Rakell in the middle of the period, but the Coyotes scored another one to hand Anaheim a 4-2 loss.

The Ducks took the next flight home to play host to the Nashville Predators at Honda Center. In the middle of the first period the Predators started the scoring on the powerplay with Anaheim defenceman Jackson Lacombe in the box. But within the final two minutes of the period forwards Tomas Tatar and Rickard Rakell managed to score and turn the game around just before the break. The second period was was played pretty patient and focused by both teams after Ducks defenceman Hampus Lindholm scored a rare shorthanded goal at 04:38 in the period. After the second break both forward Ondrej Kase and veteran defenceman Jake Muzzin added a goal to the scoreboard, to give Anaheim a commanding lead. Nashville scored another one, but still the Ducks won with a final score of 5-2.

For the final game of the week Anaheim took the trip to Bell Centre facing off against the Montreal Canadiens, who find themselves in the bottom of the league. With the Ducks players probably still with their heads in the locker room, the Canadiens started the scoring with just 55 seconds into the game. Luckily Anaheim didn't get nervous at all and tied the game just two minutes later when defenceman MacKenzie Weegar scored his second goal in his first four games with the Ducks. The second period wasn't exciting in any way for the audience, despite a minor penalty for both the Ducks and Canadiens. Late in the third period it was Montreal who took their chances, scored two more goals and handed Anaheim an unnecessary 3-1 loss. (MM)

Anaheim stops bleeding after losing seven straight

Mar. 13th, 2022

After two months under GM Matthias Mohr the Anaheim Ducks find themselves out of the playoff ranks for the first time. The Calgary Flames have taken over 3rd place in the Pacific Division and the Minnesota Wild hold the final wildcard spot with 6 points ahead.

The Ducks visited Rogers Place to battle the Edmonton Oilers, who are 2nd in the Pacific Division with solid 7 points ahead. Anaheim got outshot 41 to 24 shots, played a bad first period but managed to get back into the game. Forward Rickard Rakell was the second star of the game (1 goal, 1 assist) but still the Ducks lost 6-4 to the Oilers at the end.

The second and last game of the trip took the Ducks to Canadian Tire Arena and the Ottawa Senators. Just a week ago the Sens handed Anaheim a tough 5-1 loss in front of their home crowd and it was time for revenge. For the first time in weeks it was an almost perfect game for the Ducks, both offensively and defensively. Forward Maxime Comtois started the scoring early in the first period with his 18th goal of the season. Defenceman Hampus Lindholm scored the insurance marker in the second and youngsters Brayden Tracey (powerplay) and Jake Bean (empty netter) added two more goals in the third, to give Anaheim a 4-1 victory.  (MM)

Ducks keep falling, go 2-7-1 in last 10 games

Mar. 6th, 2022

Anaheim is struggling hard over the past few weeks. The team is winless in the last six games, just two more points ahead of the 9th-seeded Calgary Flames in race for a playoff spot and has only 15 games remaining to turn things around and make  the playoffs, somehow.

The Ducks started this week at Honda Center to welcome the Ottawa Senators. With team scoring leader Tomas Tatar out of the lineup Anaheim couldn't find enough ways to score on Senators goalie Marcus Högberg. Ottawa scored three unanswered goals in the first period, before Ducks forward Maxime Comtois scored early in the third for the home team, but couldn't prevent the 5-1 loss at the end.

The next day Anaheim visited TD Garden and the Boston Bruins, the second hottest team in the league. Former Bruins goalie Malcolm Subban started in goal, but didn't last longer than six minutes before being replaced by regular starter John Gibson. Boston came out and scored five unanswered goals within less than five minutes, taking a commanding lead after the middle of the first period. David Pastrnak scored a possibly record-breaking hattrick within 2:39 minutes. The Bruins played it calm now, added one more goal in the second period before forward Ondrej Kase scored on the powerplay for the Ducks, to give his team at least one little reason to cheer midway through the third period before losing 6-1 at the end.

Back home at Honda Center the Ducks were to play the New Jersey Devils and had a poisitve start into the game. Forwards Trevor Zegras and Maxime Comtois scored in the first period to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead heading into the first break. The team managed to stay focused and keep the score until early third period, when the Devils scored three unanswered goals to take the win and hand the Ducks another 4-2 loss and a devastating 2-7-1 record the past ten games. Anaheim losing ground and three games in a row

Feb. 27th, 2022

The Ducks finished a very disappointing month of February with a record of 4-6-1 and three losses in a row. They are just 4 points ahead of the 9th-seeded Calgary Flames, who also have one game in hand.

Still the week started pretty good for Anaheim with another  7-3 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center. After almost three weeks captain Ryan Getzlaf (1 goal, 2 assists) was back in the lineup and started the scoring early in the first period. The Ducks continued scoring four unanswered goals before the middle of the second period. The Kings tried to come back with two quick goals within a minute, but Anaheim stayed focused and never seemed to lose sight of winning this one.

The Ducks were heading to Michigan next, to play the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. For some reason Anaheim wasn't ready to compete, got outshot 38 to 23 shots by the bottom five team and lost 3-1 at the end. Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras scored the only goal for his team early in the second period, assisted by former Red Wing Tomas Tatar and defenceman Jackson Lacombe. Detroit forward Filip Zadina scored the last goal of the game at 08:45 in the second, meaning the Ducks couldn't find a way to score in the second half of the matchup - two points that could be deeply missed in the standings at the end of the regular season.

Next on the agenda was a four hour bus trip west to play the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. Anaheim had a pretty good start with Nick Ritchie scoring early in the first period and captain Ryan Getzlaf adding another one at 12:47 to give his team a 2-0 lead. Both teams scored a goal in the second before the Blackhawks managed to turn the game around with two goals in the third period and the game winner by Ryan Ellis (PP) 21 seconds into overtime, handing Anaheim a 4-3 loss.

The Ducks finally headed home to Honda Center to play the San Jose Sharks, who they just had beaten two weeks ago. After a long road trip there wasn't much left in the tanks, again, and so Anaheim got outhot 57 to 24 shots in front of their home crowd. San Jose scored three unanswered goals before Sam Steel scored the lone goal for the Ducks in the very final minute of the game. Thanks to Anaheim goalie John Gibson (SV% .947) they only lost 3-1 at the end. (MM)

Ducks still searching for consistency, go 1-1-0

Feb. 20th, 2022

It has been almost four weeks, since the Anaheim Ducks have won two games in a row, going 5-5-0 over their last 10 games. The team is looking for consistency with less than two month to play in the regular season.

In this weeks first game the Ducks played host to the San Jose Sharks at Honda Center. It was not just a rivalry, but also the top seeded teams in the Pacific Division facing off against each other. While there were no goals scored in the first period, San Jose took a 2-1 lead in the second period before Anaheim did the same in the third. In overtime it was young center Trevor Zegras scoring his 16th goal of the season and giving the Ducks a 4-3 victory.

Two days later the Winnipeg Jets visited the Pond, who are still in the race for a wildcard spot in the Western Conference. It wasn't a high scoring game, but you could feel the Jets didn't come to make any presents. They took a 2-1 lead in the middle of the second period, before Ondrej Kase scored the first and later lone goal for the Ducks. Winnipeg superstar Patrik Laine scored early in the third period to seal the deal and hand Anaheim a 3-1 loss. (MM)

Huge comeback vs CBJ, Ducks with 2-2-0 record

Feb. 13th, 2022

Anaheim has played an up and down week, but managed to regain distance to the Western Conference wildcard spots, with 7 points ahead of Arizona and Winnipeg.

The first game took the Ducks to Nationwide Arena to play the Columbus Blue Jackets, and it was a game people will remember for a long time, if not forever. After a tough and goalless first period, the Blue Jackets took a commanding 5-2 lead after the second. Anaheim came back with a goal from Trevor Zegras and two goals from Adam Henrique to take the game into overtime. It was slovakian forward Tomas Tatar who earned the Ducks the 6-5 win with his 25th goal of the season.

Back home at Honda Center Anaheim played host to the visiting Edmonton Oilers. It seemed the Ducks were still pretty exhausted falling 4-0 after the second period with Oilers superstar McDavid scoring a natural hattrick. In the third period Anaheim managed to score three goals on the powerplay but still lost 5-3 at the end.

The third game of the week took the Ducks to Scotia Bank Arena to play the by way best team in the league, so far: the Toronto Maple Leafs. Having learned from the earlier two games this week, despite being outshot 41 to 24 shot,s Anaheim managed to force the Leafs into overtime and shootout, where both Adam Henrique and Ondrej Kase scored and gave the Ducks a  5-4 shootout win.

For the first time this week Anaheim players got two days to rest before moving on to Scotiabank Saddledome to face the Calgary Flames. After a long week it was obvious the Ducks didn't have anything left in their tanks. Calgary scored five unanswered goals before Anaheim forward Brayden Tracey finally scored at 07:28 in the third. Defenceman Jake Bean and center Trevor Zegras scored, too, within the next ten minutes but couldn't prevent the 5-3 loss. (MM)

Anaheim wins Rivalry before losing to Canucks

Feb. 6th, 2022

After having played just one game last week, the Ducks returned to business winning their last game of January before losing their first game of February. Meaning a "neither fish nor meat" week.

Anaheim played host at Honda Center to their californian rival, the Los Angeles Kings. After the first period the Ducks took a commanding 3-0 lead and both fans and officials might have thought of a huge win at the end of the game. Anaheim forward Trevor Zegras scored another one in the second period, Los Angeles came back in the third to shorten the score to 4-2, before defenceman Jake Bean sealed the deal for the Ducks winning with a final score of 5-2

The Ducks took the trip to Western Canada to play the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena. Despite outshooting the home team 32 shots to 24, Anaheim failed to earn any points, losing by a score of 5-3 at the end. While the first and third period were both equal scoring, the Ducks' neck breaker was the second period. Vancouver scored three goals, the last one with 27 seconds left on the clock, and played strong defence the rest of the game. (MM)

Lightning hand Ducks first regulation loss in weeks

Jan. 30th, 2022

"You can't win them all and of course sooner or later there will be games we don't take points with us.", Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf told the media after losing 7-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Honda Center, Anaheim.

The Ducks got outshot by Tampa Bay, who had a total of 51 shots combined (Anaheim with 23 shots ) fired at opposing goalies John Gibson and Malcolm Subban. Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov dominated the game with goals in each period and later was voted "First Star of the Game".

Anaheim didn't have the best start falling 3-1 after the first period, with youngster Trevor Zegras scoring for the Ducks. In the second period the team looked a lot more focused and patient with their chances, managing to get one back when Ondrej Kase scored his 16th goal of the season on the powerplay. Late in the second it was the earlier mentioned Kucherov who scored the 4-2 for the Lightning before entering the second intermission.

With the beginning of the third period Tampa Bay forward Cole Caufield scored twice within three minutes to give his team a commanding 6-2 lead. Nikita Kucherov completed his hattrick in the middle of the period before Ducks forward Sam Steel scored the final goal of the game, assisted by defenceman Jackson Lacombe and Anaheim leading scorer Tomas Tatar. Ducks stay hot going 5-0-1 under new GM

Jan. 23rd, 2022

After winning three games in a row, the Anaheim Ducks took their first loss in overtime under new GM Matthias Mohr last week. Still the team is in a good position for a playoff spot with 8 points ahead of the 9th seeded Winnipeg Jets in the Western Conference.

The Florida Panthers visited Honda Center for another episode of "This could already be the playoffs" vs the Ducks. Defenceman Jake Bean opened the scoring for Anaheim at 07:34 before veteran Radko Gudas evened the match in the final minute of the first period. The fans had to wait until the middle of overtime, before another goal was scored by Panthers defenceman Riley Stillman, handing the Ducks a 2-1 loss

Three days after losing at home the Ducks visited Prudential Center and the New Jersey Devils to take a clear 5-1 victory. After no goals in the first period, the game got going early in in the second period with Maxime Comtois starting the scoring 52 seconds after the break. The team was propeled by defenceman Hampus Lindholm (3 assists) former Devils forward Adam Henrique (1 goal, 2 assists) and young winger Ondrej Kase (2 goals), who combined for the three stars of the game.

Just one night later it was the Calgary Flames visiting the pond at Honda Center against Anaheim. Both teams took three penalties each without managing to score in the first period. After the break Anaheim finally took advantage, started the scoring, won the game 4-2 and celebrated longtime Duck and captain Ryan Getzlaf (game-winning goal, 1 assist) as "Man of the Match". (MM)

Anaheim earns three wins in debut of new GM

Jan. 16th, 2022

The Anaheim Ducks lost 6 of their last 7 games before new GM Matthias Mohr was hired a week ago. The main focus was to get the team back on track mentally, because there is enough quality on the roster to compete for a playoff spot. With some small adjustments the Ducks went on to win three in a row after the change in front office.

Anaheim visited the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center and Backup Goalie Malcolm Subban got the chance to prove he's worth to be on the team. Colorado fired a total of 60 shots towards Subbans net, and he saved 59 of them with an unreal save percentage of .985 . The Ducks themselves had just 25 shots on goal, but they played focused and patient the whole game to win it 4-1 after the final buzzer.

Back home at Honda Center the Ducks faced the Vegas Golden Knights in a still young Pacific Division Rivalry.  Again Anaheim got outshot 31 to 18, but Starting Goalie John Gibson allowed just one goal by Vegas' Reilly Smith in the middle of the third period. Ducks point leader Tomas Tatar started the scoring at 02:32 of the first period, while Rickard Rakell and youngster Brayden Tracey each added another goal to the score later in the game to give Anaheim a 3-1 win over Vegas.

The last game of the week took the Ducks to Xcel Energy Center to matchup against the Minnesota Wild. Anaheim outshot the Wild 51 to 20, but didn't manage to get more than two behind Minnesota goalie Tyler Parsons. The Ducks got an early goal by Trevor Zegras 01:35 into the first period and the game itself already felt like a playoff match with the teams close to eachother in the standings. You could feel the tension over the whole sixty minutes until time ran out and Anaheim took a hard-earned 2-1 victory against the Wild. (MM)
